Boys & Girls Clubs recognizes Floyd Higdon at awards ceremony

Sunday March 01, 2009 - President George W. Bush created the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation in 2003 to help recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making to our nation. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime. Higdon received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for 1,400 hours of volunteer service to the Boys & Girls Clubs and additional volunteer efforts with his church and missions. Floyd Higdon works tirelessly and has taken on many roles during his tenure with the Clubs. He recently has taken the lead role in developing and building the new Walters Club currently under construction on Memorial Park Drive. “Floyd honestly is constantly at the Club and has become indispensable to our organization.” “We are deeply honored that he’s chosen our kids as one of the beneficiaries of his work,” stated Joe Ethier, chief professional officer of the Club.

Floyd Higdon is also extremely active with his church and missionary work. His mission trips have taken him to Moldova, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cali Columbia and Ghana, Africa. Each year Higdon also travels to Washington, DC as a representative of Counterpart International to seek funding from the government to help with the cost of shipping containers. He is also very active with ministries in the United States such as AIM (Adventure in Missions), Set Free Men’s Farms, Habitat Restore for Hall County, Camp Glisson-Dahlonega, Chattahoochee Baptist Association, Dahlonega Free Clinic, Latin American Community Church, Save Me Brother Rescue Mission, Yonah Mt. Baptist, and Get Real Ministries.
