Amirrah H. – Youth of the Year Candidate
Amirrah is a 15-year-old 10th grader from New Jersey and a proud member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Lanier. She chose to participate in the Youth of the Year competition because she wanted to share her story with others who may relate to her experiences and highlight how the Club has helped her overcome obstacles in her life.
Friends and family describe Amirrah as energetic, giving, and loving. Passionate about helping others, she finds joy in supporting people and being a positive influence in her community. She draws inspiration from her sister, dad, aunts, and close friends, who encourage her to continue striving for her goals.
In school, Amirrah is a majorette and especially enjoys her history classes because they allow her to better understand the world we live in. She has learned that “hard work will always pay off,” a lesson that guides her in all areas of life. Her future goals include graduating high school early, joining the Marine Corps, and attending cosmetology school to one day open her own hair salon. She also plans to become a certified cosmetologist and hopes to create a versatile hair product for all hair types.
Outside of academics, Amirrah has many creative passions. She enjoys painting, poetry, reading, dancing, watching documentaries, and listening to jazz, orchestra, and her favorite artists Daniel Caesar and Khamari. She also loves 90s sitcoms, with Princess and the Frog being her favorite movie. Her favorite snacks are Takis and soup dumplings, and if given the chance, she would love to travel to Tokyo, Bora Bora, and Dubai.
To other teens, Amirrah’s advice is to “be yourself and don’t let people around you turn you into something you’re not.” She lives by the quote: “Time waits for nothing and no one.”
